Detailed tour itinerary

Day – 1
Flight to Ulgii &Gate of Altai Tavan Bogd National Park camp at Tsagaan Gol Valley

Early in the morning flight from Ulaanbaatar to Ulgii city. Our crew will pick you up at the airport. Flight time takes about 2:30 hours. In summer flight schedule to Olgii is early in the morning.After breakfast drive to Altai Tavan Bogd national park. It is a about 7-8 hours of driving to get to the ranger’s station which is about 200 km. Pitch our camp. From here our trekking trip will be started.We will come to Tsagaan gol valley’s ranger station.

Day – 2
Trek Tavan Bogd Massif
Trek Tavan Bogd Massif ( 15km up to Base camp )

This will be a special day. After breakfast we will prepare ourselves for the day’s journey. We’ll leave our driver and car behind for the next few days and load the camels with necessary supplies. We’ll set out west toward our destination.By walking from the trails you will feel wind of Mongolia, smell of aroma, the silence and pristine nature of Altai Mountains The next camp is a 16km, 5 hour trek, where we’ll overnight in tents.

Day – 3

Climbing Malchin Peak (4050m)

Malchin Peak (Herder Peak) is one of the Holly Five Peaks of Tavan Bogd. Local people worship and give a high respect to this peak. On the ascending way and on the top of the mountain we would encounter Ovoos (Pile of stones which is worshipped and paid respect). Climbing to Malchin Peak is non technical. However, it is very stiff, terrain is rocky and slippery. We would be following one path. Now we are just meters close to Russian border. From Malchin peak we would see Majestic snow capped Tian Shan Mountains. We are on the roof of Mongolia, below we would see 22km long Potanine Glacier and breathtaking view of Tavan Bogd Mountains. Day – 4
Trekking Back to Tsagaan Gol Valley

Come back to Tsagaan gol valley from the other side of the mountain in the valley. This is another beautiful valley where the Tuvan people live. They are a small ethnic group live here. It is called white-colored river because it gathers white dust, earth and sediments from the glaciers of Altai Tavan Bogd. On the way down we will visit Tuvan people’s ger here you will see nomadic people’s life style and culture of them. Pitch the camp along the bank of the Tsagaan gol river.

Day – 5
Hike to To Shiveet Khairkhan and Khar Salaa valley

Shiveet Khairkhan Mountain is one of the sacred mountains of the Altai Mountain range. For thousands of years, this mountain has been a home for men and for wild animals. Shiveet Khairkhan Mountian is rich with archaeological remains from the Bronze and Iron ages. It is estimated that 400 ibex live here. The tremendous valley called Tsagaan Gol (White River) Valley is connected to Shiveet Khairkhan Mountain from the west. The local Tuvan nomadic people have their winter shelters by the foot of the mountain, but during the summers, they move up where the Tsagaan Gol begins as melt water from the glaciers. Tuvans are a Mongolian ethnic group and have lived in this area for centuries. They practice shamanism and this is the only place where you will see these nomadic Tuvan people living close to each other. The population of Tuvans in Bayan-Ulgii is about 3000.(overnight in tent)

Day – 6
Altai Mountains(3300m) crossing & Bear Valley

Today we will pass the Altai at the highest elevation in our trip( 3300m ).On the top of the pass it is covered snow and glaciers. But we go by trails not to step on the snow. After crossing the Altai Mountain we enter to Bear Valley as local nomads used to call.Bear Valley it is an wild valley where no more nomadic people lives. We are now in a scenic area, where small streams develop into rives fed by the melting glaciers flowing down broad steppe valleys.It will be warmer than previous valley. Because the altitude will be lower to 2000-1900m. You will be witnessed how reach this area with rivers and mountains of Altai Tavan Bogd complex. When you sleep in the tent hearing the sound of fast flowing river you will get energy for a year! (overnight in tent)

Day – 7
Trekking to end of the Ak su valley

Trek down a valley with patches of Larch forests and reach the so called Green Lake( also called Heart lake ), and we go down along the river called Ak su. Which is again white-colored river.This is almost the end of the Ak su valley. From the tomorrow we will be in the summer camp of Kazakh nomads. Summer here is a joyfulness time for a nomads, they gather in one place stay closer to each other’s summer camp. Their happiest time of the year is a summer. In summer they organize small Naadam of Mongolia, where will take place a Mongolian national wrestling, horse race, and singing the folk songs by locals. If we are lucky we might see them because they organize their own Naadam on different date every year because they are nomads. (overnight in tent)

Day – 8
To Aral Tolgoi

Aral Tolgoi is a top of the great Khurgan and Khoton lakes. We will take road of northern side of the lake. Because it is dry and a nice view than other side. We will visit a nomad Kazakh family on the way. Whell-known with its hospitality every Kazakh family will happy to have you on his family to serve you the tea. (overnight in tent)

Day – 9
Day with nomads

Today we will drive to a Kazakh nomadic family where we will organize a small nomadic ceremony by inviting all neighbors and slaughtering a sheep and have “ Five fingers” feast. Sing songs and enjoy your time with nomads. We will visit Kazakh Eagle hunter family, get introduced with the eagle hunting traditions and skills. See the bird. This place is a middle of the Khoton lake. We will just walk along the bank of the lake. Here you can swim in the lake and fish if you have fishing gears. (overnight in tent)

Day – 10
  • Drive back to Ulgii.

Full day drive down a dramatic steppe valley along the Khovd River that drains from the Altai Tavanbogd massif creating a series of beautiful lakes.On the way we will stop at deer stone and man stones which is an part of the history of the area.Along the way, you’ll enjoy the frequently changing views of the mountain colors. We drive through Tsengel soum, Ulaankhus soum. With the rest of your day, it will be possible to walk into town to visit the local museum or wool and felt craft shops. Some of the most beautiful pieces of Kazakh handicraft are the wall hangings made by Kazakh women for the walls of gers. Overnight at the hotel.

Day – 11
  • Transfer to the Airport

After early morning breakfast Transfer to the Airport & Departure.
